BMW Brake Guide

BMW Brake Service

Brakes are vital to every vehicle. For luxury brands like BMW, brakes can be made of very strong materials that handle friction more effectively compared to less expensive vehicles in the DC Metro area. The technicians at %%di_name%% will go over a brief guide to BMW brakes, part of our pledge to you. We want you to get the most out of owning your BMW.

BMW Brake Pads

BMW brake pads are semi-metallic, meaning they are made of both ceramic and metallic components designed to wear less over time and stop better at higher temperatures when the brakes are applied, especially during stop-and-go traffic at Dulles Airport. .

In general, BMW brake pads have:

  • Outstanding stopping power (as good or better than stock)
  • Quiet operation (no squealing or groaning)
  • All-weather performance
  • Bare minimum of brake dust
  • Excellent feel (initial bite), especially on M-series cars

How Long Do BMW Brake Pads Last?

Anywhere from 30,000 to 70,000 miles, but it depends on your driving habits. If you commute from Loudoun County and travel in stop-and-go traffic, your brake pads will wear out faster. You can order genuine BMW parts, including brake pads, from our dealership.

BMW Brake Fluid

BMW brake fluid should be normal or low viscosity, typically DOT4 or DOT5, meaning they operate at higher temperatures. DO4 brake fluid operates u,p to 446 degrees Fahrenheit, while DOT5 goes up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. BMW requires this type of brake fluid because these are high-performance luxury vehicles.

BMW Brake Fluid Change Cost

Expect to pay around $150 to change the brake fluid on your BMW vehicle. BMW recommends changing the brake fluid every one to two years, but you should consult your owner’s manual for the exact timing.

BMW Brake Light

When your BMW brake light comes on, it may mean something serious if the light comes on and stays on. It could indicate your brakes are worn, you’re leaking brake fluid, one of the brake pistons isn’t functioning properly, or the master brake cylinder is broken.

Every BMW also comes equipped with a brake pad wear sensor that will tell you when it’s time to change the brake pads. Brake pads are the metal/ceramic parts that stop the wheel from turning by causing friction against the wheels. These parts wear out the most over time.

How to reset the brake light on a BMW

Your brake pad sensors may need to reset after having service. You can easily reset your BMW brake light by following these steps:

  1. Insert the key or fob in the ignition. If you press a button to start, press the button without hitting the brakes.
  2. If you have a key in the ignition, move it to position two without starting the engine.
  3. Open the driver’s side door and wait about 10 seconds.
  4. The brake pad sensor light should reset at this point.

Otherwise, your certified BMW brake technician will reset the brake light for you after completing your brake service.
