The Incredible BMW IconicSounds Design

2023 BMW X1

Who wouldn’t like to have their own soundtrack? If you’re one of the smart Loudoun County drivers to purchase an electric vehicle like the BMW iX, BMW Sound Design has decided you deserve one, composed by Hans Zimmer himself. The famous movie score composer teamed up with BMW to use the silent running of electric cars as blank canvas against which to create a customizable set of melodious sounds played through the BMW audio system to provide acoustic feedback on your car’s performance. It’s called the BMW IconicSounds Design.

Five “My Modes” of the BMW IconicSounds Design

The quiet operation of electric vehicles like the BMW i4 is well-known. While some DC Metro Area drivers prefer that silence, others miss the familiar purr of a BMW gas engine. BMW IconicSounds Design, created by the BMW Sound Design Group, makes it possible to have the visceral experience of sound while still enjoying the efficiency of an electric vehicle. Here are the five modes of sounds that can be played through the BMW audio system to accompany the performance of your car:

  • My Mode Personal – uses a spherical sound pattern and many tonal components to convey a basic acoustic mood
  • Personal or Comfort Mode - harmonious and elegant sound to set a relaxed mood, while also forming the basis for the driving sound that is heard outside by the acoustic pedestrian warning system
  • My Mode Sport – emphasizes the active driving experience through a pronounced acoustic presence and extremely dynamic modulation that gives the driver acoustic feedback on the engine’s power delivery and the current driving state.
  • My Mode Expressive - complemented by high-contrast neon colors and abstract patterns on the BMW Curved Display. The basic tone starts as a violin, then transforms to a higher sound structure as the vehicle accelerates, with the harmony changing in several stages with increasing speed. The first complete chord is heard at 37 mph, followed by a second complete chord at 75 mph
  • My Mode Efficient - the acoustic feedback is completely suppressed
