BMW sDrive vs. xDrive: Comparing BMW Drivelines

2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e charging

BMW sDrive and BMW xDrive are simply two branded names for BMW’s two main driveline types — front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, respectively. But other than that, how do these BMW systems really compare? Let’s get into it now to find out! You’re always more than welcome to call us or contact us online in the meantime for additional information.

What’s the Difference between a Drivetrain & Driveline?

A vehicle’s driveline is often mistakenly referred to as a drivetrain. The drivetrain is the entirety of the system that helps make the vehicle move; drivetrains include everything from the engine to the wheels.

While a driveline is part of the drivetrain, it simply consists of the piece of the drivetrain between the transmission and the wheels — more specifically, the component that is made up of either 2WD, AWD, or in some vehicles, 4WD parts. BMW xDrive and sDrive are technically part of a BMW’s drivetrain, but they are, more specifically, two distinct driveline types.

What is BMW sDrive?

BMW sDrive is a driveline system that sends power to only two wheels in the vehicle. Traditionally, sDrive has directed power to the rear wheels (rear-wheel-drive), but sometimes, as is the case in the BMW X2 crossover SUV, it may direct power to the front wheels.

What is BMW xDrive?

BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, which is standard on select BMW sports activity vehicles (SUVs) such as the BMW X7, utilizes intelligent all-wheel drive designed and engineered by the same brand that is obsessed with performance. Here’s how it works:

  • It works together with Dynamic Stability Control and monitors road conditions.
  • If the sensors detect slippery surfaces or loss of traction, the electronically controlled system sends power to the wheels or wheel with the most traction.
  • This helps to regain control and maintain responsive handling on Loudoun County and DC Metro area roads.
