How to Check BMW Brake Fluid

BMW Wheel

Let’s face it: your BMW’s brakes are one of its most important safety features. While newer features like the BMW Active Driving Assistant are handy, sure, brakes quite literally stop your vehicle. An object in motion stays in motion, unless force is applied to make it stop; brakes apply this required force. So it’s crucial to ensure that you’re checking your brake fluid regularly. Why? Brake fluid is key to helping you stay safe on DC Metro-area and Dulles Airport roads. Learn more below with the BMW of Sterling service center!

What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that helps with the movement of the brake pedal. It lubricates your BMW braking system and keeps it from corroding. Brake fluid in many vehicles in glycol-ether based, but there are also silicone-based (DOT-5) and mineral oil-based (LHM) fluids available. Check your owner's manual for details on what kind of brake fluid your BMW uses.

3 Steps to Check BMW Brake Fluid

Need to check your BMW brake fluid to be sure there’s enough to stop safely, wherever your DMV, DC, and Virginia or Maryland area travels take you? Here’s how to do so in three simple steps:

  1. Find your BMW’s brake fluid reservoir located on the master cylinder under the hood. Check your owner’s manual for more information on the exact location in your vehicle.
  2. Locate the “minimum” and “maximum” lines on the outside of the brake fluid reservoir. Then check the brake fluid against these lines. If the brake fluid is closer to the minimum line, you should schedule brake service soon.
  3. Take a peek at the color of the brake fluid. If it’s dark brown or black and looks more like oil, you’ll need a brake fluid flush ASAP.

Why Does BMW Brake Fluid Need to Be Changed?

Your BMW brake fluid should be regularly changed because:

  • When brake fluid gets older, it becomes contaminated with small particles. These can damage important brake-related systems in your BMW.
  • Brake fluid naturally attracts moisture. This can create corrosion on your brakes over time, which reduces their stopping power.
  • Systems like your BMW ABS and traction control generate heat when they activate, and this in turn can decrease the lifespan of your brake fluid.

What Color Should Brake Fluid Be When Healthy?

New brake fluid should be clear to opaque with a yellowish hue. As it gets used over time after repeated braking, it will change color. Brake fluid that is dark and oil-like brake has picked up dirt and debris over time, which can affect the performance of your brakes if left unattended. It should be changed out ASAP.

Brake Fluid Service Intervals

You should check your brake fluid with every oil change, or at least one to two times a year. Brake fluid has been known to last about four to five years, but this of course varies depending on the car, driving habits, and driving conditions. The BMW-trained technicians at the BMW of Sterling service center are knowledgeable about when to replace your brake fluid.
