Trim (Exterior)
There are two models for 2019: X5 xDrive40i and X5 xDrive50i. The standard trim for each is the xLine Design, featuring 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, power-folding heated mirrors, LED foglights, and satin aluminum exterior trim. The optional M Sport Design brings more aggressive styling features reminiscent of BMW's M series.
Engine (Power)
Two power units are available. The xDrive40i is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. If you want something even mightier, the xDrive50i is fitted with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, producing 456 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. For both models, this power is transferred to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, launch control, and Sport and Manual shift modes.
Performance
With such powerful engines, it is no surprise that the X5 is a lively performer. The xDrive40i can get to the magic 60 mph from rest in just 5.3 seconds. The xDrive50i posts an even more impressive 0-to-60 time of 4.6 seconds. All models of the X5 are all-wheel drive, although more power can be diverted to the rear wheels according to the terrain, or by selecting Sport mode. This ensures that the X5 performs well both on and off-road. While a large SUV would not be expected to be the most economical vehicle, the xDrive40i returns a very respectable 26mpg on the highway, with even the xDrive50i achieving 22mpg.
Interior
In xLine Design, the X5 seats five and comes with synthetic leather upholstery and power-adjustable, heated front seats. A panoramic moonroof is standard, as is dual-zone climate control. BMW's iDrive infotainment system is provided, with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker audio system, a navigation system, and Apple CarPlay. Also standard is vehicle and key memory, which restores your preferred settings for seat and mirror position, climate control, and even radio volume. Three optional upgrade packages are available. The Convenience tier brings satellite radio, four-zone climate control, and keyless entry. The Premium tier introduces helpful options like wireless charging, and the potential for the infotainment system to respond to gesture control. Finally, the Executive tier adds further luxury features, including soft-close automatic doors and remote engine start.
Safety Features
The X5 is a substantial, well-engineered vehicle with a good range of air bags, which in itself should provide reassurance. On top of this, it has many technological safety aids. Standard features include a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-departure warning. In addition, Active Protection System, Evasion Assistant, a head-up display, night vision, a surround-view camera, and a park assistant can all be added at extra cost. Overall, the X5 offers a great level of protection.
